Vitamin D - how our skin makes it & some reasons we might need a supplement.
Oh hey there, sunshine! Did you know that your skin is capable of producing vitamin D? Vitamin D keeps our bones, mood and immune system strong.
The way we make Vitamin D is by sunlight hitting our skin, turning a molecule called 7-dehydrocholesterol (found in our skin cells) into previtamin D3. Previtamin D3 needs to be converted into its active form (vitamin D) by traveling via blood to liver and then to the kidneys to make the form of vitamin D that our bodies need.
While our skin has an incredible ability to produce vitamin D, it is RARELY enough; most people are deficient in Vitamin D. It may be necessary to get vitamin D from a supplement (there is also not much in food unfortunately), This is one of the supplements that is a must!
Make sure to get your vitamin d levels checked at your yearly physical but here are some signs you might be low:
Fatigue
Irritability
Low Mood
Muscle weakness or pain
Poor immune health
Recommendation: Take a daily supplement with a meal that contains some sort of fat food (walnuts, nuts, red meats etc).
