Road Trip Nutrition Tips
Tis the season for long, dreamy road trips! We love to romanticize road trips – so here are some nutrition tips to help you feel good while traveling.
Hydration is Tricky: Hydration is so important but frequent pee breaks are annoying. Instead of guzzling water all at once (which will lead to frequent bathroom breaks) you will want to sip water slowly and consistently throughout the journey – However water doesn’t only come from water!! Choosing water filled fruits and veggies will keep you steadily hydrated.
Pack Snacks: Shelf-stable fruits like oranges, uncut apples, bananas, and pears are perfect companions for a road trip. They provide water, essential vitamins and fiber! They are also good to pair with other snacks you buy along the way.
Mind Your Sugar Intake: When stopping at the gas-stations, while it's tempting to reach for candies and sodas, excessive sugar consumption can lead to dehydration, and glucose/insulin spikes (not good, especially when you're sedentary for long stretches). At the gas stations: opt for nuts, cheese, uncrustables, sandwiches, or even protein bars.
Mind Your Salt Intake: High-sodium snacks may seem satisfying in the moment, but they can cause fluid shifts and contribute to dehydration. Choose the low-sodium options if they are available!
Active Breaks: We love pit stops, try to get your heart rate up during them! Walk around the gas station, or even better plan your stops at scenic areas <3 This will help to prevent muscle aches the next day and keeps your energy levels in check.
Practice Mindful Eating: Its easy to eat while forgetting that you are eating (mindless munching). When eating your snacks, make it the main event and be present while eating!
As always, be kind to yourself! Use these tips as information to guide your choices — instead of strict rules. Don’t be shy if you have any questions, email/text me @: emily@foodandmirth.com / 818-804-8056
